Voting for Cornwall’s economy – Charlotte’s column (week 5)
People I’m talking to here raise many issues. What unites most is that Cornwall needs a sustainable economy.
Healthcare, jobs, housing, schools, and fair funding for elderly care all rely on sustaining Labour’s investment. Paying down UK debt must be supported by economic growth, rather than savage cuts.
A public sector wage freeze in Cornwall – the Tory way – would reduce spending in local shops and slow down the housing market.
Cutting tax credits, while raising the tax threshold to £10,000 – the Liberal Democrat way – would have no positive impact on many local families, four out of ten pay no net tax.
We need investment to support new industries, including the Falmouth port development. We need Cornwall Council to meet the need for affordable local homes – and to recognise that a district retail centre next door to county hall would have a negative impact on shops in Truro’s centre.
This election is three way. At every election since the second world war when Falmouth and Truro were in the same constituency, Labour won.
You need a strong voice for Cornwall in government.
This week the most important issue facing you is casting your vote. You decide.
